In the UK, the services industry dominates the economy. Our time of mass industrialiasation has come and gone and we are now living in a services based economy which in fact accounts for 73% of GDP.

This means that millions of people in the UK are expending their working life in an office chair behind a desk. Human beings, believe it or not, aren't built for this at all. Thinking about the human body in a strictly Darwinian way we evolved has hunter, gather, scavengers.

Fast forward to today and there is little need to hunt, gather or scavenge in the UK. Being employed in an office in the 21st century doesn't demand hunting gathering or scavenging. What it does require is self discipline.

To preserve a strong body and an office based career you need to do three things. Following these steps will guarantee you will stay away from an ever increasing waist line, avoid experiencing back difficulties later in life and will add years to your life.

First you must fully accept that sitting behind your nice executive glass desk for hour after hour, day after day is without question bad for your health. Research has shown that humans should be taking 10,000 steps or 5 miles a day.

This is difficult to accomplish in an office therefore the easiest option is to change your commute into work to contain more walking or if you're feeling bold cycling is great exercise.

The second step is to change your diet. Millions of people appear to have forgotten that breakfast is the most important meal of the day and prefer to go to work on an empty stomach. As a consequence people struggle to really get going in the morning and by lunch time are weak with hunger. Then a large is often consumed in a matter of minutes leaving you feeling bloated and sleepy.

By having a decent breakfast such as a bowl of cereal or porridge or eggs on toast your energy levels will be far better and you can enjoy a lighter lunch which means being more alert in the afternoon.

Finally you need to make sure you are working in an ergonomic office. Maintaining a good posture behind executive desks will help end repetitive strain injuries and spine troubles which plague those who have spent a long time behind executive office desks.

Executive office furniture has improved noticeably in recent years. There is now a lot more thought behind the ergonomic elements of the furniture, placing the user at the heart of the design process.

By following these three pieces of advice, when it comes to the end of your career you will not experience some of the issues faced by those who ignored their own health behind an office desk for decades.
