Burford is a town found in Oxfordshire, England. Some buildings in the town can be dated back to the 15th century such as the parish church. The church is famous for its merchants' guild chapel, and a memorial to Edmund Harman, Henry the VIII's barber-surgeon. Burford was known for its wool trade up until the 17th century. The Tolsey was once the center of the local wool trade and can be found at the center of high street.
A famous 13th century house still standing is the Burford Priory. This country house was remodeled over the years until it was restored to its original glory at the beginning of the 19002. In 1949 the priory was the home of the society of the Salvation of Our Lady. Eventually the number of nuns at the priory diminished and eventually included Benedictine monks. However in 2008 it was converted back to a private home.
There was supposedly a battle fought in Burford in 752AD. The battle was told as being long and bloody and fought against the Saxons. The anniversary of this battle is celebrated by the residents, as it is famous for the standard of the Golden dragon, of which fell in battle. The mighty Aethelum's sarcophagus was found in the area in 1814 and can be viewed in Burford Church Yard. This celebration is continued to keep alive the tradition of the golden dragons of the Britons.
Cotswold Wildlife Park is about 2 mile south of Burford. The wildlife park has many exhibits on amphibians, invertebrates, birds, reptiles and mammals from around the world. Originally the park was part of the Bradwell Grove Estates. In 1969 the owner of the estate opened the grounds to the public and in 1970 animals from around the world were brought in to produce over 40 different types of exhibits.
Burford is home to the Burford Garden Company, a store that encompasses 15 acres. The shop is an independently owned home and garden center that has two restaurants and a fresh food market. Many celebrities who live in the area like to frequent it and include, Kate Winslet, David Cameron, Kate Moss and members of the band Radiohead.
