If your roof leaks it may not seem to be a problem every day the sun is shining. The Majority of the time it may not seem that is really that big of a problem to have a small leak in your roof. It may even seem unnoticeable if you are not home when it’s raining. In many states where there is not very much rain, it may not bother you much at all. The problem lies in the time factor of a leak. If there is a minor leak in the roof and only during severe rains you seem to notice it. Maybe only some slight discoloration in the ceiling, But a leak none the less. It is good to address the issue while it is fresh in your mind, as before long you may just grow accustomed to it.
Here is what can happen if the leak is not addressed in a timely manner. Of course the obvious problem being is that the leak could grow worse. Over time the leak once started may tend to get worse and worse. So what once was a small annoyance could turn into a big problem down the road. A leak may get absorbed by your insulation in the attic and not even really make its presence know in the house. The insulation will keep soaking up the water over time and eventually you may discover it penetrating the house. When the leak is trapped in the insulation it may start to ruin the insulation.

Another problem that can arise from insulation soaking is that the insulation can possibly store the water for long periods of time. This will lend to extra moisture in the attic which can possibly cause mold. If a person has allergies in the house, they would understand that mold is not the best thing for allergies. There are ways to kill mold in the attic, but if the leak is still active, the mold will most likely grow back.
Now another thing that can happen if the leak persists is that it will get worse over time. If the leak gets worse over time it can add a list of problems to you house. The leak can start to rot the wood directing under the area that is damaged. If the wood gets soaked often, then it starts to weaken the plywood. If the ply wood gets soaked often enough it will start to rot. When the wood rots it get weaker to support the roof. I have even heard of a case where a homeowner went to walk on his roof for some after storm repairs and fell straight through. So this left an enormous hole in the roof, which probably made a bigger leak. Another thing that can happened is that water can leak through the roof and go anywhere in the house. The problem may start with the roof with a small leak, but the water may end up somewhere totally different in the house. The leak could be noticed in the house directly below the hole in the roof, but also the water may flow down the walls and into the basement.
