This article will focus on judo and all its basic principles. The bigger they are, the harder they fall”, this is the phrase that defines what judo is all about. Judo is based on the scientific principle of leverage and balance. This means that a bigger and stronger man can easily be defeated by a small and weak man.

First principle is strength must not be countered with strength. Otherwise, the stronger man, of course, will be the winner. Always keep in mind that he is strong only because he is in balance. If you have retained your own balance, you can take advantage of him by focusing on how you can distort that balance. You see, a man is in balance if he stands upright and keeps his center of gravity inside a small circle drawn around his feet. Before a throw can be executed, you must offset his balance by taking his center of gravity out of this circle. The fulcrum or the point in which you could put him out of balance is the center of gravity.

Another principle is the action of levers. All of us know that when we use a crowbar in lifting heavy objects, it becomes easier. Applying this principle to an opponent, you will realize that the wider apart your hands are gripping your opponent, the greater your leverage. You can apply this in throws. Thus, the secret is getting the greatest advantage you can. Of course, the direction of pulls and the timing of your attacks also matter a lot.

There are many natural forces of physics that a judo expert puts to use like gravity, momentum and friction. Knowing this, you will know that judo isn’t all about muscular force.

Now let us consider the application of the force of gravity in judo. So the heavier your enemy, the harder it is for you to move him horizontally or vertically. In contrast, a greater gravity pull on him can make him fall easily. Gravity is a force that is already pulling your enemy downward. All you have to do is make him lose his balance by causing his center of gravity move from its base and viola, the gravity works for you as you pull him down to the ground.

Let’s stay you are face to face with an opponent, standing. Basically, what you will do is withdraw as he advances towards you. When he is physically unable to advance his foot further, he will be forced to lean forward, thus, losing his balance. Then you will be able to throw him and take advantage of gravity pull.
