Dental hygienists are people who are professionally trained to perform various dental treatments and oral care, which includes mouth, teeth, and gums, to patients. The dental hygienist jobs can range from routine duties to the occasional complicated procedures, and might vary according to the setting and location they practice in.
Â
Â
The general duties of a dental hygienist would be cleaning and polishing teeth, removing plaques on and along the teeth, charting tooth decay and oral diseases to be reviewed, take, examine and interpret dental x-rays, screen patients with oral cancer symptoms, and keeping and updating patient's dental records and history. Apart from that, they can make molds for crowns and dental prosthetics, apply anti-cavity substances to the teeth, advise on nutritional oral care, and instruct their patients on how to perform aftercare and maintain good oral hygiene habits. There are also some that would help administer local anesthetics during surgeries, or perform other restorative procedures.
Â
Â
The job and environment preference of an individual dental hygienist would determine which setting they would work in. Nevertheless, most of the dental hygienists would practice in private offices, where there would only be one or a group of dentists practicing. Others would work in hospitals, community organizations, health maintenance organizations, dental institutions, military, or schools in general. In some places, dental hygienists would be required under supervision of another dentist at all times, while some only require minimal or no supervision at all. Most institutions that are run by the state require little supervision.
Â
Â
As for dental hygienist jobs beyond oral care like researchers, consultants, educators, and administrators, they would be required to have additional education or work experience, depending on which job specifically. One can even take their Masters level degree if they are interested in such jobs. Nevertheless, these jobs can usually be found in universities of dental colleges.
