Forum marketing can be a great way to promote your business. There are some right ways to do this and there are some ways that will get you banned from the forum. Here are some key principles to follow to keep from getting on the bad side of the forum moderator.

Principle #1 - Read the instructions.

Every forum has a FAQ or some post with the Forum rules. Read those before you make your first post or create that signature file. Every discussion board has it's own culture. Clashing with this could mean sudden death to your campaign.

Principle #2 - Post an introduction.

You wouldn't walk into a party and just start talking without telling people your name, would you? The same thing applies when you first post a message to a message board. This is not the time to be promotional. Just state what your name is and what you do. You'll have other opportunities to tell people about your business.

Principle #3 - Stay on topic.

If the forum is about cats, don't post information about dogs. Period. This is one surefire way to annoy your moderator. This can also get your post deleted. If you can't find anything on topic to post about maybe you need to find another group to join.

Principle #4 - Create a meaningful signature.

Some forums give you a lot of wiggle room with your signature. If it's allowed, this is where you build your own list. Offer a free report in exchange for an email address. Make sure the report is on a topic that will interest the people in the forum.

Using forums to market your business is an excellent idea. Read the forum rules and act accordingly. Remember that when you visit a forum, it's like you're visiting someone else's house. Respect their house like you would want someone to respect yours.
