Good trip plans can make truck drivers successful. Having a quality trip plan for some loads can be the difference between turning a profit and turning your reputation sour with a late load. Trip Planning and logging go hand in hand because you need to have a clear understanding of Hours of Service Rules in order to make a quality trip plan.

In a trip plan, you lay out what you are going to do. Your logs show what you have already done.

The trip plan basically answers these Four questions:

1. Where am I going?

2. How long will it take to get there?

3. Where and when am I going to stop along the way?

4. What can I do to make my trip as profitable as possible?

Starting out with a plan that answers the questions above will get you heading down the high pay highway. Follow these tips to make truck driving jobs easier with a good trip plan. Also, making these steps habit will help you run a more profitable business as a truck driver.

Here are a few Trip Planning Tips:

1. Run ahead. Take your slack time at the end of your trips. Always check to see if you can deliver your load early. When you deliver early, you can become available for the next load sooner.

2. Use driving hours for driving. Don't let personal; stuff get in the way of your on duty time.

3. Try to Multi-task whenever you can. Use the time you spend waiting to organize TripPaks, to do training, and planning.

4. Give your self the ability to drive at slower speeds. Driving at slower consistent speeds will increase fuel efficiency and also make drive times more predictable.

5. Keep your trip plan updated, or update it at the beginning of each shift.

6. Lastly, take care of yourself by eating right, sleeping right, and exercising when you have own time.

All the tips from above certainly contribute to good thorough trip planning. A couple of other added benefits to quality and well thought out trip planning are stress relief and fewer log violations. The stress relief benefit is huge. When you plan properly you are less likely to feel the pressures of late load delivery and you will ultimately make fewer mistakes. Answering the questions from above will also keep your logs in your mind and lead to fewer violations.
