am reading Crush It written by Gary Vaynerchuk, and I am happy to report that he has some of the same views I do. He believes in being authentic, no matter how that shows up.
What I really resonate with is how he believes you have to really get to know your own marketing DNA. Gary believes that you can be much more successful if you use the social media marketing tool that matches your DNA.
Meaning, if you love to use video, then use video. If you love to use the phone or radio, use that method. If you love to write, then go for it! As I was reading about marketing DNA, I realized that I am not a huge fan of video. I dont like the way I look on video, and I am really self conscious. I keep telling myself that I need to start. Ive been told more than once that I will get used to it eventually, and that might be true, but Im not at that point yet.
One thing I absolutely love is using phone and radio marketing. My husband tells me I have a face for radio, which is meant as a joke, I think. I feel totally comfortable on the phone. Im not nervous, and I love the interaction with others on the line. I have a good voice for that type of marketing too. So, when I do an interview or a tele-seminar, I really get excited because I get to do something I love. That is my marketing DNA. I would like you to check in with yourself and see what you feel real comfortable doing and just do it!
Please be different! As you know, I encourage my clients to be unique and different with their social media marketing efforts so they can stand out from the crowd! We dig in to see what is unique or different about them and bring it out into the light! My new word for you, compliments of my coach, is "quirk." Find that quirk that makes you different and infuse that into your business.
As I am discovering my own quirkiness, Im finding things that I totally forgot about.
Recently, my daughter decided to learn how to play the flute. I played the flute all through school. I actually marched in my high school band. I remember how much I loved it and how my friends thought it was dorky to like something like that. I had to hide my love for band when I was with my friends and act like I really hated being in the marching band. What a shame it is to have to hide and act different just to fit in! I dont do that any more, and I dont want you to either!
Find time in your day to think back to the things you used to love to do. Something that wasnt main stream, whether it was cheerleading (yep I did that too), band or some type of club you belonged to that set you apart from the rest of the normal peeps. Then incorporate that quirk into your newsletter, posts or blog! Have fun with it!
