Most of us are just happy to hang onto our jobs during the Recession right? Well, there are some out there that are happily sitting pretty with exactly the opposite problem. For mid to senior Strategic Sourcing and Purchasing Managers, Category Specialists and Procurement Leads, life is a bed of roses.
Demand for their talent base has never been higher and it looks like it's on the upswing with no sign of slowing. Many companies are cutting back in other areas, but are busily hiring talent in strategic deployment, negotiations, vendor selection and front line procurement. And, across many different industries such as Consumer Packaged Goods, Group Purchasing Organizations and Crown Corporations for example, it's not just one position being recruited for, but routinely the requirements are for whole departments being expanded or created from the ground up. This way, full advantage can be taken by being more efficient and cost effective by putting more dollars on the bottom line.
But here's the problem, demand for this type of talent right now severely outstrips supply. Purchasing jobs are prolific at the moment. At any moment, a mid level procurement professional who decides to put him or herself on the market could be considering two to three offers within two weeks.
In-house recruiters are going to a very dry well along with many other companies trying to attract exactly the same very few highly qualified candidates. What is most remarkable is that in a lot of cases because procurement recruitment is not what they do all the time, those in-house recruiters who compete for these candidates don't necessarily realize how competitive the market is for the talent they seek to hire. But it is highly competitive and that's exactly why they need an experienced ally to help them navigate through the process and network with exactly the right individuals they need to attract for their open purchasing jobs.
This is where a specialty recruiter can really bridge the gap for an in-house recruitment manager. But "buyer beware". It's critical to find a recruitment partner who will give true value and who really understands the Procurement space - it's complicated and requires a lot of specialized training to know what one is doing. Recruitment generalists are really not up to the task of sourcing really good talent in Purchasing & Supply Chain. It is a very small and closed community and they can very quickly spot a recruiter who doesn't know their stuff.
