A resume is basically a document that contains a list of the job seekerâs credentials that they feel is relevant to the career position that they are seeking. It is a summary of their personal information, qualifications/skills, relevant job history, and educational background, and can be 1-2 pages in length. It is often said that resumes are the most powerful when they are only one page in length. There are three basic formats or styles for a resume â Chronological, Functional, and Combination.
The chronological resume lists an applicantâs relevant work history in reverse chronology starting with most recent or current job first, then working back through time. This is considered by far the most common layout that is used. The main body of this form of resume is often referred to as the Professional Experience section. This format uses acquired experience to build a personâs credibility while using growth within a particular career to coincide with the relevant information.
The format of a Functional resume uses work experience and skill levels as the focal point and is arranged by job function or area of skill. The skills are the focal point and are specific to the type of employment that is being sought. The format emphasizes a personâs professional capabilities and uses a summarized experience history as the primary means of professing the personâs professional competency level. This resume format is recommended mostly for employees seeking a career change. Generally, it depicts a varied work history with limited experience. Also, it is preferred when applying to jobs where a specific personality trait or skill level is preferred or even required.
The Combination resume uses a mixture of the chronological and function formats. It often begins with a list of the applicantâs skills, and then it focuses on a chronological work history. Unfortunately, this type of resume tends to be repetitive, therefore it is a less impressive, less used resume format.
The Curriculum Vitae, though it is not a typical resume style, is still worthy of mention here. The CV, as they are referred to, normally includes a listing of the applicantâs professional work history including much detail with academic credentials, contributions or significant achievements, and relevant work history. They can include a sample of the applicantâs work, depending on the profession, and can be several pages in length.
A functional resume focuses on your skills and experience, rather than on your chronological work history. It is used most often by people who are changing careers or who have gaps in their employment history.
