Much has been said about about President Obama's stimulus package. Republicans are skeptical and some Democrats are wavering in their support. The good news is that although the amount of $ 700 billion has been tossed about, a very small percentage has actually been spent. I, along with a sizable percentage of the American public, think no more should be spent until we take a hard look at who really needs help and who doesn't. More importantly, it would be nice if the average taxpayer understood what was going on with their money.
Admittedly, the General Motors bailout was rather heavy-handed. Aside from the fact that maybe our government should not be in the automobile business, the over-all strategy has never been explained, at least in terms that I can understand. Why did they do it and what results did they expect to achieve? If you or I put large sums of our cash into a business I doubt that we would do so without a business plan. I would like someone from the government to explain the GM maneuver to me and the business plan behind it. All I can see is that a once strong American company is now owned by a foreign company and their partner is the United States Government. That sounds something like a shotgun wedding between socialism and capitalism and who knows what the children will look like?
Even more troublesome is the fact that the unemployment rate is approaching 10% and, aside from reporting that fact and a few mumbled words about how awful it is, no one in the administration or the Congress has anything to say about it. What happens to these people when their unemployment benefits run out and they still have no job? How are we going to create the 2-3 million jobs it will take to turn them back into wage earners? And when is this perfect storm of economic disaster going to hit?
Sending money to the states for public works projects, part of the Stimulus Package is nice. However, this isn't the 1930's and the hundreds of thousands of college graduates who have been down-sized, fired, or layed off aren't going to pick up a shovel and start digging. You can't put a computer technician behind the wheel of a forklift and expect anything but a disaster to occur.
Stop the average American on the street and ask them to explain the Stimulus Package. When they have no explanation ask them how the government is going to deal with 10% of our workforce being unemployed. You will begin to get the idea that between the administration and the Congress, the blind leading the blind was never more meaningful.
I do not fault the President for this state of affairs. He inherited exactly the same situation McCain would have faced if he had been elected, the legacy of a President who was simply too dumb to be in office. I am, however, deeply disappointed in Barack Obama, an individual who even those who disagree with him call extremely articulate, seemingly unable to explain to the American public, in simple words that all of us can understand, just what is going on and what he expects to do about all of those unemployed Americans. Does he have a plan to put them back to work and, if not, why not?
As far as I know, the General Motors bailout, or whatever you want to call it, did not take a single person out of the unemployment line, and it is highly unlikely that it will. The executives meanwhile, will continue to receive their obscene salaries and bonuses, although perhaps better hidden then before. All of this wouldn't be so bad if only we understood what is going on. Instead, what we have today is every politicians dream, what amounts to a blank check from the Treasury funding a program that no one understands. How can you beat that?
