In the woes and throws of this current economic recession, does it seem financially prudent for the courier giant, FedEx to be awarding along with it's cup, a first prize of ten million dollars to the top golfer? Millions of Americans are struggling to fulfill the basic needs such as putting food on the table and paying the bills. The recipients of this huge prize are already millionaire golfers.

The FedEx Cup is awarded to the golfer who has accumulated the most points by playing in and winning tournaments throughout the year. So far the top ten golfers are the richest ones. Do these affluent millionaire golfers really need a ten million dollar prize with the cup? The cup itself is prestige enough. The winner of the Cup is crowned the champion of all the golfers on the PGA tour for the whole year. It is the ultimate prize and he, the envy of his peers. Does, say for example Tiger Woods need another ten million in his pocket? I believe he is worth 99 million annually from Nike and from endorsements.

What would be more financially responsible for FedEx would be to have the ten million awarded to a charity or a community or city project ( for example a hospital wing) that the golfer or FedEx can choose and have his name carved in stone to. This in turn would benefit thousands of the general public who are in turn, are paying supporters of golf tournaments. Maybe the public can vote on the most deserving project to be the ten million dollar recipient.

I know it is FedEx money and they can do what they want with it. But then again we paid them to ship our do dads all over the country. In all FedEx actually tees off 35 million in prize money. The other 25 million is sprinkled down the list of the 125 eligible golfers to the last finisher who ends up winning a paltry 32 thousand dollars.

All change starts with a single step and if public pressure is loud and persistent enough, perhaps there will be a change for next years FedEx Cup.
