When looking for a job, how many of us have focused solely at the salary being offered? While itâs true that many of us consider salary to be very important when applying for a new job, many of us are actually looking for something much more.
Recent studies have found that that jobseekers see opportunities for training and skills development within the job as being just as important as how much theyâre going to be getting paid. These results are not surprising.
Especially for younger workers who are moving into the work force for the first time, many are looking to gain valuable on-the-job experience as part of their growing knowledge and development in their chosen field.
But itâs not just on-the-job training that is important for employees. Extra training courses in things like sales training or presentation skills will greatly benefit employees who are looking to gain a little more fulfilment from their job.
Of course, employees are not the only ones to benefit from undertaking training in a wide variety of training, whether it is technical or skills based training. Employers and businesses with skilled employees who are confident in their abilities will ultimately be more productive and successful.
There are a number of things that employers and potential employees can do to ensure that everyoneâs knowledge and skills base grows while working and collaborating together to run business successfully.
For jobseekers: When browsing job ads, keep an eye out for whether the ad states obvious things like âopportunities for growth within companyâ, âon-the-job training providedâ, and other things which indicate that you wonât just be expected to do the same job day in day out without learning anything new. When going for interviews, ask plenty of questions of potential employers as to the opportunities they provide for extra training courses in things like leadership training or presentation skills, depending on whatâs relevant to the advertised job description.
For employers: Make it clear what is expected of potential employees â what skills they already need to possess, and what kind of training you can provide to build on these skills. The relationship between employees and employers has to be a symbiotic one, so by offering them skills training in return for their hard work, the business can perform more effectively.
