Judo can be practiced by both men and women, boys and girls. The guidance of an instructor is very important. The relative intensity of practice can be regulated to fit the individual’s needs and tolerance. Judo is a natural art. It is neither mystical nor dangerous. On the contrary, it has great value for any person, no matter what his field of endeavor may be. Few art forms can give the individual what judo has to offer.

Let us talk about the basic principles of the martial art called judo. Basically, a small and weak man can defeat an opponent who is larger and stronger. It’s all based on the scientific principles of leverage and balance. Like they say, the bigger they are, the harder they fall.’

The first principle is, strength must not be opposed with strength. Otherwise, the stronger man, of course, will be the winner. Always keep in mind that he is strong only because he is in balance. Without his balance, he is weak and if you have retained your own balance to gain advantage of this weakness. You see, a man is in balance if he stands upright and keeps his center of gravity inside a small circle drawn around his feet. Before a throw can be executed, you must offset his balance by taking his center of gravity out of this circle. The center of gravity referred to here is the fulcrum or the point on which you, as opponent, could put him out of balance.

The action of levers is another principle. We all know that lifting a heavy object using a crowbar is so much easier. If you apply this to judo, you will understand that the wider apart your hands are gripping your opponent, the bigger your advantage. You can apply this in throws. The point here is to make sure that you get as much advantage as possible. Also, it requires timing when you execute your attack and of course the direction of your pulls.

Gravity, friction and momentum are some of the natural forces of physics that a judo expert uses. Knowing this, you will know that judo isn’t all about muscular force.

Let’s now talk about the force of gravity applied in judo. You will have a hard time moving your enemy horizontally or vertically the heavier he is. In contrast, a greater gravity pull on him can make him fall easily. Gravity is a force that is already pulling your enemy downward. All you have to do is make him lose his balance by causing his center of gravity move from its base and viola, the gravity works for you as you pull him down to the ground.

Let’s stay you are face to face with an opponent, standing. When the opponent is advancing toward you, you withdraw as much as he advances. He loses his balance when he leans forward because he could no longer advance his for further. This way, you can throw him and take advantage of the gravity pull.
