I was inspired to write this article after speaking with a recent potential career coaching client of mine. So just think of all the persons that are seeking work i.e the unemployed, under-employed forced to take more that one part-time job, the college student- 22% fewer will be hired according to the National Association of Colleges and Educators Report (Class of 2009), and with a closer look at the BLS report between 11.3% and 15% Hispanics and Afro-Americans are jobless. Here's five questionable signals that might be the reasons this candidate hasn't been successful yet in getting a job or finding that career match!

1. Middle years and older candidate. It's easy for you to remember the 80's and the 90's and Oh my God!, a decade has almost gone by in the 2000s. The employer has started to do the math! What have you been doing all this time. They will not discriminate but your resume may be place in the other category.

2. Academically you have acquired over 8-10 years of post graduate training and a recent graduate degree, why are you here? What's wrong with this picture? OK, you need an income or you're just looking for a temporary parking place.

3. You interview very well, very confident, knowledgeable, and most assertive! Most likely ,you're being interviewed by a person who could easily be your oldest son or daughter. This employer is going to run away from you; there intimidated yet impressed with your credentials and on the other hand this candidate could be more than the investment they're looking for.

4. Excellent references. This candidate has the full package and will s/he fit into our culture. This employer responds positively that they will get back with you, that there are stacks of applicants, we're looking for the "best" candidate , and you know how crazy the job market is these days. You're puzzled but reluctant to respond to this statement.

5. Let's say your job profile is somewhat different and that you're not so desperate. You were laid off and you have a great story why you should get that job. You recently graduated for college and this job is simply a stepping stone that will give you some "real" work experience.

Uniqueness, perseverance, and perhaps creating a business or job for yourself may just be what the doctor ordered. What direction should you go from here? Find someone who will help you through this initial crisis or rejection. Sometimes family will not be so supportive and objective because they do not and are not trained and lack the education regarding career, job loss, and personal transitioning. Begin a plan of action including in your plan time for personal growth i.e. rest, taking a walk, exercising, meeting with friends and associates that will support and listen with and for you, spiritual support as your faith is important, eating well, and don't forget to keep that line of communication open with that significant other. We have all changed over the years and scheduling a career and personality assessment can only benefit and support your mission towards ultimate personal development and growth.
